Computer monitor repair question...?

I have a Dell D2026T. The picture is very dim, borderline unusable. I have the colors each cranked to the max, and the brightness as high as I can get (If I push any higher, everything suddenly turns yellow). Even at these settings, the dim picture looks washed out like the brightness is pushed too far. The funny thing is that when I pull up the on-screen menu, its bright as can be. So the issue seems like it must be in the amplification of the input signal. My bright idea was going to be to use a couple 800 MHz op-amps to buffer-up the signal before it gets to the monitor, but I was wondering if there is any internal adjustment possible? Or is this a common failure perhapse and the culprit IC is known? Maybe the signal gain is partially determined by a few fixed resistors that I can swap out? Its impossible to tell this stuff without the service-manual.

Not sure how to ans. these technical questions but I would remove the cover and adjust the master brightness control. You will see a black box with a large red wire coming out of it, that's the high voltage transformer. It has 2 knobs or screw adjustments one is focus and the other brightness. Try turning up the brightness.
As to fixing these monitors I wouldn't try, I don't like working on them. They are complicated and use special parts that can be hard to find.
